Picture This- “Come On, Let’s Go”

“Hurry up”, she said.

“Why?” he said

“We need to get there now” she said

“What’s the rush?” he said.

“The train leaves soon”, she said.

“Which train?” he said.

Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks, contemplating the question. Which train should they take? All around them were hundreds of commuters scrambling around. Some glancing at their watches and cursing inwardly that they were late for work, dodging and weaving through the crowd like Olympic sprinters. Others keeping a firm hand on their lifeblood of coffee in one hand, and the folded up newspaper in the other. Mothers with strollers charging like bulldozers through the crowd. Tourists with all manner of cameras gazing upwards and firing off shots. Seniors doing their best to avoid being run into.

As people moved past in swarms around them, some brushing and bumping into these two solitary stationary targets among this sea of movement she suddenly smiled and turned towards him.

“It doesn’t matter”, she said.

“We can go anywhere we want today”, her smile even larger now as she headed towards the ticket machine.

“Come on, let’s go.”

      5. It is beautiful, plus they have little shops in there at Christmas. You can literally spend an entire day in Grand Central. Food, drinks, shopping, people watching. During the week they have these somewhat hidden long passages I need to remember to photograph some time!

      2. Lol…I’m all about matrimonial self protection :-). I wasn’t sure if this would work and I wasn’t planning on publishing it tonight. Normally I read on my way home from work but tonight I was a little tired so I closed my eyes but this idea popped in my head along with this particular photo I took on a little excursion last January. I was doing a blog about clocks and Grand Central definitely had to be a stop. I’m glad you liked it and that it is something new. This was such a great challenge. I must do more of these, but having this come from you and having it be a photo challenge I really wanted to participate. So thank you Danielle for such an awesome idea!

  3. Wonderful, the subtle discovery of being free to go anywhere, and amongst a maddening crowd is where you can actually think clear ; where you can precisely be alone to think………I have experienced this at the very busy terminals.Nice post.

  5. Sometimes it’s difficult to see that the only thing stopping us from living life is our own self! But once the madness is dialed up all the way, it almost fades in the background, like white noise, nothing else exists but the realization, “I’m free!”
    I can imagine myself in that picture- great job conveying the that feeling, and thank you for sharing 🙂

    1. Thank you very much! What you say is so true. That white noise sensation in the middle of all the madness is an odd sensation. And then that flicker of I’m free! Knowing you can do whatever you want. Go wherever you wish. Really appreciate the comment. In the two years of writing this blog this is only the second bit of fiction I have written so comments like yours make me think I should do more of it.

      1. You should certainly write more fiction like this one! Ultimately, I don’t think anything is truly fictional- it is simply a version of reality. And that’s why it resonates with others. All of us have had experiences like this, but not all of us have the gift to put it in the right words, you speak for everyone 🙂

      2. Wow, I really appreciate that comment. It is very true that things really aren’t fictional and a reality that you haven’t experienced yet. Maybe it’s something you wish you could do. Maybe it’s something you did that you wished had turned out better. Somewhere it is a reality for someone. Really, thank you for these comments. I think I’m going to need another menu option on the blog now for fiction 🙂

      2. Oh indeed. That runaway sort of moment. The idea is so appealing quite often. And thanks on the photo.I love Grand Central and I never really took photos there before until I needed some clock photos for another blog. Then I climbed the stairs and just said, I really must try this shot for myself!

  9. This is so aptly described. It reminds me of a moment I once had in a train station in Oxford. I had a 24-hour pass. I could go anywhere I wanted, take as many trains as I wanted. Everyone around me had a direction, a destination. They moved with purpose. My only purpose was to experience. I went to Cardiff, Wales that day. Just because I could.

    1. Thank you, I had almost the exact same experience when I was in Britain 25 years ago. I had a month British rail pass and the entire trip was done on the fly. I had narrowed down where I wanted to go beforehand, but I had no timetable, no commitments, and no order that I had to adhere to. It was wonderful for that reason. Ironically that was one of my choices too. I took the overnight train from Edinburgh to London, transferred stations and went to Cardiff, arriving some time that afternoon. Ah Freedom!!

    Really like this short story! Your descriptions of the people all around them was great – even funny at times (moms charging like bulldozers with their strollers! LOL).

    1. Thank you 🙂 I liked that line too but I’m not sure how I came up with it! I’m so glad you like this story. This was only my second attempt at writing a piece of fiction out of all the blogs I have done over the last two years. Getting such a nice response from people like you is the best! Thank you!
